Mathias Baumann "Nightscapes"
Intuitive photographies are interpreted as „frozen“ moment. In a fraction of a second an image can be captured which human eye never can discern this way. Mathias Baumann eliminates this aspect of „frozen“ moment through an extreme expansion of exposure. He takes his photographies in clear full moon nights.
The peculiar effect of the moving lightsource is that it looks like a miniaturized landscape which has been transported into a studio and were carefully softly illuminated. Nevertheless the image is brillant and colourful because film – on the contrary to human eye – even at night record colour. So you first think to look at an usual colour photography which in a strange way is somehow different. And so something becomes visible through photography human eye cannot see – silence.
